End to End 1998 Richard Bartlett Lands End to John o'Groats the Richard Bartlett way!
The first cyclist to hold the unpaced record for the Lands End to John o'Groats ride was C.J.Mather with a time of 5 days, 5 hours & 12 minutes set in 1903. The current record, set in 1990 by Andy Wilkinson, is 1 day, 21 hours, 2 minutes & 18 seconds. It took me, along with 15 other CTC members, 28 days!. They found their replacement couple soon afterwards so I was out!. (Without being in if you see what I mean). Such disappointment!!!. Would my old panniers be capable of carrying 28 days supplies or should I purchase larger ones?. How many changes of clothing would be required?. What gear ratios would be needed for the hills of Cornwall & the mountains of the Highlands ?. How would I get to Lands End to start the tour ? and how would I get home from John o'Groats ?. The list of questions seemed endless. After weeks of pondering these & many other questions, I was finally ready. Read on
